Estamos aquí en la segunda entrega del análisis de los equipos de cara al arranque de la temporada. En esta ocasión analizaremos a Arsenal y Liverpool, los dos últimos campeones de la Premier League y dos equipos que llegan en circunstancias un tanto distintas.
Por un lado está Arsenal, muy fortalecido después de haber ganado la última Premier League y de haber conquistado también la Community Shield de manera contundente ante Manchester City el fin de semana pasado. Por el otro está Liverpool, que después del corto régimen de Arne Slot comienza ahora una nueva aventura de la mano de Andoni Iraola. Habrá que ver qué puede hacer el español con este nuevo equipo y, sobre todo, qué implicaciones tendrá el cambio desde el punto de vista de Fantasy.
Porque si algo tienen en común Arsenal y Liverpool es que siempre son equipos con muchísimo potencial para nuestros equipos de FPL. La pregunta está en encontrar cuáles son los jugadores que debemos considerar y, quizá todavía más importante, cuáles son las trampas que debemos evitar.
Como en el artículo pasado, escuché las entrevistas con los corresponsales de ambos equipos en la serie de Planet FPL, donde se habló a fondo sobre sus plantillas y lo que podemos esperar de ellas esta temporada. Los invito a escuchar ambos episodios completos, pero por lo pronto, estas son algunas de las conclusiones que extraje y que pueden ayudarnos a construir nuestros equipos.
Arsenal
Arsenal comienza la temporada como campeón y nuevamente como uno de los grandes favoritos para quedarse con el título. Para nosotros, sin embargo, la pregunta es dónde invertir dentro de un equipo que tiene una enorme cantidad de alternativas.
Tres jugadores para elegir
Christos Tzolis — £6.5m
El primer candidato que aparece con mucha fuerza es Christos Tzolis. Acaba de llegar al equipo, se ha visto bastante bien durante la pretemporada y cuesta solamente £6.5 millones. En estos momentos se le puede considerar probablemente una de las mejores opciones ofensivas del Arsenal para comenzar la temporada, incluso por encima de nombres mucho más establecidos como Bukayo Saka o Kai Havertz.
Además, con la salida de Trossard, la competencia por ese puesto se ha reducido y parece probable que durante las primeras jornadas tenga un número importante de minutos. Adam Pritchard, corresponsal del Arsenal en Planet FPL, incluso lo señaló como su opción ofensiva preferida para comenzar la temporada y destacó su participación en algunas acciones a balón parado.
La Community Shield reforzó todavía más esa candidatura, con dos asistencias ante Manchester City.
Por £6.5 millones, Tzolis puede ser una de las mejores puertas de entrada al ataque del campeón.
Obviamente habrá que estar atentos. Es un jugador nuevo y necesitamos encontrar esa certeza de minutos antes de pensar en él como una opción a largo plazo. Si comienza a salir demasiado temprano o aparecen señales de mayor rotación, tendremos que reevaluarlo. De inicio, sin embargo, luce bastante bien.
Riccardo Calafiori — £5.5m
El segundo es otro jugador que tuvo una buena pretemporada y que además anotó en la Community Shield: Riccardo Calafiori.
Por £5.5 millones nos permite entrar en la línea defensiva del equipo que mejor defiende en la liga y, desde el punto de vista Fantasy, puede ser uno de los defensores del Arsenal con mayor vocación ofensiva. Tiene capacidad para subir, aparecer en posiciones adelantadas y generar ocasiones, lo que le abre rutas hacia los puntos más allá de los clean sheets.
Su potencial ofensivo parece superior al de Mosquera y, aunque Gabriel siempre tendrá esa enorme amenaza en los tiros de esquina, su precio empieza a ser prohibitivo y probablemente lo alejará de muchos de nuestros equipos. Pritchard también mostró una clara preferencia por Calafiori entre las opciones económicas de la defensa y confiaba bastante en sus posibilidades de arrancar como titular.
Si queremos cobertura defensiva del Arsenal sin comprometer demasiado nuestro presupuesto, Calafiori suena como una de las mejores opciones.
Kai Havertz — £7.5m
El siguiente jugador me sorprende un poco, pero al mismo tiempo su candidatura está respaldada por su consistencia, por la opinión del corresponsal e incluso por lo que escuchamos en el último episodio de Bendito Fantasy, donde el Profe lo mencionó como una de las alternativas interesantes en ataque.
Kai Havertz cuesta £7.5 millones y parece seguir siendo uno de los jugadores preferidos de Arteta, incluso con la presencia de Gyökeres. Una de sus grandes ventajas es precisamente su capacidad para adaptarse a diferentes estructuras. No necesita jugar exclusivamente como nueve para mantenerse dentro del equipo, algo que le ofrece distintas rutas hacia los minutos.
Además, Havertz puede participar como enlace en la construcción de las jugadas y no solamente aparecer como finalizador. Pritchard también se inclinó por él sobre Gyökeres y, al momento de grabar el episodio, incluso tenía a Havertz en su propio equipo de Fantasy.
Quizá no sea el nombre más evidente cuando pensamos en el ataque del Arsenal, pero por £7.5 millones hay argumentos suficientes para considerarlo.
Un jugador para monitorear
Martin Ødegaard — £6.5m
Martin Ødegaard aparece como uno de los jugadores a monitorear. Su precio de £6.5 millones es interesante, aunque Arsenal tiene ahora una enorme cantidad de alternativas en el mediocampo.
Lo verdaderamente interesante será observar su posicionamiento. Ødegaard terminó bien la temporada pasada y durante la pretemporada se le ha visto con una mayor intención de jugar hacia adelante.
Si ese posicionamiento ofensivo se mantiene y empieza a traducirse en contribuciones, £6.5 millones puede convertirse rápidamente en un precio muy atractivo. Antes de comprometernos con él, sin embargo, quiero ver sus minutos y, sobre todo, qué tan consistentemente puede producir puntos Fantasy.
Un jugador para no tomar en cuenta
Bruno Guimarães — £7.0m
Una de las nuevas figuras del Arsenal esta temporada es Bruno Guimarães. Sabemos perfectamente de su capacidad, de lo que puede crear y del control que puede ofrecer en el mediocampo, pero una cosa es ser un extraordinario jugador de Premier League y otra ser un extraordinario asset de Fantasy.
Bruno puede jugar como seis o acompañando a Declan Rice, y precisamente ahí aparece el problema. Es probable que en Arsenal no tenga la misma libertad ofensiva que tenía cuando jugaba en Newcastle. Pritchard tampoco lo considera una opción atractiva de inicio y cree que su función dentro del nuevo mediocampo puede limitar su potencial Fantasy.
A £7.0 millones, ligeramente más caro que Ødegaard y con un rol potencialmente más retrasado, hay demasiadas alternativas que prefiero antes que él. Por ahora, queda fuera de nuestro listado.
Liverpool
Liverpool entra en una nueva etapa con Andoni Iraola y eso por sí solo convierte al equipo en uno de los más interesantes para observar durante las primeras jornadas.
La idea parece ser recuperar un fútbol mucho más agresivo, con presión alta y con Florian Wirtz acercándose a Alexander Isak cuando Liverpool busca recuperar la pelota. Lauren Harris, corresponsal del Liverpool, espera precisamente un equipo de mayor intensidad y advirtió también que esa propuesta podría producir partidos mucho más abiertos mientras los jugadores se adaptan al sistema.
Liverpool puede convertirse en uno de los equipos más atractivos para Fantasy precisamente porque sus partidos podrían ser mucho más abiertos.
Desde el punto de vista ofensivo, eso nos interesa muchísimo.
Tres jugadores para elegir
Alexander Isak — £9.0m
Alexander Isak es un gran candidato, aunque representa un gasto importante con su precio de £9.0 millones.
Su principal ventaja es bastante sencilla: es el nueve titular del Liverpool. Al tener poca competencia natural en esa posición, es probable que acumule muchos minutos, aunque obviamente dependeremos de su estado físico, uno de los talones de Aquiles que constantemente le ha dificultado mantenerse disponible.
La pretemporada ha dejado buenas señales y Harris destacó particularmente la conexión que empieza a desarrollar con Florian Wirtz. Ella misma comienza la temporada con Isak en su equipo.
Hay mucha confianza en él y perfectamente podríamos estar ante una temporada en la que volvamos a verlo peleando en la parte alta de la tabla de goleadores, como ya lo conocimos en Newcastle.
Florian Wirtz — £7.5m
El segundo jugador que debemos considerar fuertemente es Florian Wirtz.
Aquí encontramos algo diferente respecto a lo que vimos la temporada pasada. Iraola parece dispuesto a utilizarlo en una posición mucho más cercana a su rol ideal. Juega como diez y, cuando Liverpool presiona, se coloca prácticamente junto a Isak. Eso significa que, cuando el equipo consiga recuperar la pelota en zonas adelantadas, Wirtz debería estar colocado inmediatamente en una posición desde la cual pueda generar una ocasión.
Además, Harris destacó que está participando en corners y llegó a una conclusión que puede resultar controversial: Wirtz podría tener incluso un techo Fantasy superior al de Dominik Szoboszlai.
Es una declaración importante considerando la consistencia que hemos visto del húngaro, pero la posición de Wirtz dentro del nuevo sistema hace que valga mucho la pena considerarlo.
Dominik Szoboszlai — £7.0m
Y precisamente el tercer jugador es Dominik Szoboszlai.
Tiene muchas características que siguen haciéndolo tremendamente interesante para Fantasy. Participa en balón parado, tiene ese extraordinario disparo de media distancia y, quizá todavía más importante, ofrece una gran seguridad de minutos. Su versatilidad debería mantenerlo constantemente dentro del equipo de Iraola incluso si cambian algunas piezas alrededor de él.
Harris comienza la temporada con Wirtz y Szoboszlai en su propio equipo, aunque si tuviera que elegir únicamente a uno se inclinaría por el alemán debido a su mayor techo ofensivo.
Szoboszlai es uno de esos jugadores que probablemente estará fijo en muchos equipos, sobre todo considerando el buen arranque de temporada que tiene Liverpool en el calendario. Parece difícil comenzar sin ninguno de sus jugadores ofensivos y perfectamente podemos encontrar argumentos para tener más de uno.
Un jugador para monitorear
Milos Kerkez — £5.5m
En defensa aparece nuestro jugador a monitorear: Milos Kerkez.
También lo escuchamos esta semana en el podcast de Bendito Fantasy, donde el Profe lo mencionó como una alternativa para entrar en la defensa de Liverpool a un costo relativamente bajo y con un potencial ofensivo interesante.
La propia Harris reconoce que Kerkez está teniendo bastante participación ofensiva desde el lateral izquierdo. El problema no es necesariamente él, sino Liverpool. Hay que descubrir qué tan sólido será defensivamente el equipo de Iraola y si realmente podrá producir suficientes clean sheets para que queramos invertir en esta línea.
Ante esa incertidumbre, si queremos entrar eventualmente en la defensa, hacerlo mediante un jugador de £5.5 millones con potencial ofensivo puede resultar mucho más interesante que pagar por las alternativas premium.
Un jugador para no tomar en cuenta
Virgil van Dijk — £6.5m
Y precisamente por esas dudas defensivas, el jugador que dejamos fuera desde Liverpool es Virgil van Dijk.
No porque sea un mal jugador Fantasy. Todo lo contrario. Tiene bastantes rutas para producir puntos: potenciales clean sheets, DefCon y, por supuesto, la amenaza que representa en cada tiro de esquina. El problema está en el precio.
Harris fue particularmente pesimista sobre la defensa de Liverpool y considera que, mientras el equipo aprende a ejecutar la presión agresiva de Iraola, puede conceder oportunidades prácticamente ante cualquier rival. Aun así, si tuviera que escoger un defensor del equipo, Van Dijk seguiría siendo para ella la alternativa más fiable.
Pero a £6.5 millones necesitamos bastante más que fiabilidad. Necesitamos una producción que justifique esa inversión y, mientras existan rutas más económicas para entrar en la misma defensa, ese millón adicional puede ser utilizado de mejor manera en otras posiciones.
Arsenal y Liverpool volverán a ser protagonistas de esta temporada y seguramente varios de estos nombres terminarán pasando por nuestros equipos. La clave, como siempre, estará en encontrar no solamente al mejor jugador, sino al mejor jugador para Fantasy. Y entre Tzolis, Calafiori, Havertz, Isak, Wirtz y Szoboszlai tenemos varias rutas interesantes para comenzar a buscarlo.

We are back with the second installment of our team-by-team analysis ahead of the start of the season. This time, we turn our attention to Arsenal and Liverpool, the Premier League's two most recent champions, although they arrive at the new campaign under rather different circumstances.
On one side, we have Arsenal, strengthened by winning the Premier League last season and by their emphatic Community Shield victory over Manchester City last weekend. On the other, Liverpool begin a new adventure under Andoni Iraola following Arne Slot's relatively short tenure. It will be fascinating to see what the Spaniard can do with this team and, more importantly for us, what this change could mean from a Fantasy perspective.
Because if Arsenal and Liverpool have one thing in common, it is that they always offer plenty of potential for our FPL teams. The question is figuring out which players we should actually consider and, perhaps just as importantly, which potential traps we should avoid.
As with the previous article, I listened to the interviews with both clubs' correspondents from Planet FPL's Correspondent Week series, where they went into considerable detail about their squads and what we might expect from them this season. I encourage you to listen to both episodes in full, but for now, these are some of the conclusions I took away and how they might help us build our teams.
Arsenal
Arsenal begin the season as champions and once again as one of the leading contenders to win the title. For us, however, the question is where to invest within a squad that now offers an enormous number of alternatives.
Three players to pick
Christos Tzolis — £6.5m
The first candidate making a very strong case is Christos Tzolis. He has only just arrived at the club, but he looked very good during preseason and costs just £6.5m. At the moment, he can probably be considered one of Arsenal's best attacking options to begin the season, even ahead of much more established names such as Bukayo Saka or Kai Havertz.
With Trossard gone, there is also less competition for his position, making it likely that he will see significant minutes during the opening gameweeks. Adam Pritchard, Arsenal's Planet FPL correspondent, even identified him as his preferred Arsenal attacker to begin the season and highlighted his involvement in some set pieces.
The Community Shield strengthened that case even further, with Tzolis recording two assists against Manchester City.
At £6.5m, Tzolis could be one of the best routes into the champions' attack.
There is, of course, something we need to watch. He is a new player, and we need some certainty around his minutes before viewing him as a long-term option. If he starts coming off early or we begin seeing signs of increased rotation, we will have to reassess. For now, though, he looks very interesting.
Riccardo Calafiori — £5.5m
The second name is another player who enjoyed a strong preseason and also scored in the Community Shield: Riccardo Calafiori.
At £5.5m, he gives us access to the defensive line of the best defensive team in the league while potentially being one of Arsenal's most attack-minded defenders from a Fantasy perspective. He can push forward, arrive in advanced positions and create opportunities, giving him routes to points beyond clean sheets alone.
His attacking potential appears greater than Mosquera's and, while Gabriel will always carry that enormous threat from corners, his price is beginning to become prohibitive and will probably keep him out of many of our teams. Pritchard also showed a clear preference for Calafiori among Arsenal's cheaper defensive options and was quite confident about his chances of starting the opening gameweek.
If we want Arsenal defensive coverage without committing too much of our budget, Calafiori looks like one of the best options.
Kai Havertz — £7.5m
The next player surprises me a little, but his candidacy is supported by his consistency, the correspondent's assessment and even what we heard on the latest episode of Bendito Fantasy, where Profe mentioned him as one of the interesting alternatives in attack.
Kai Havertz costs £7.5m and still appears to be one of Arteta's preferred players, even with Gyökeres in the squad. One of his greatest advantages is precisely his ability to adapt to different structures. He does not have to play exclusively as the number nine to stay in the team, which gives him several different routes to minutes.
Havertz can also contribute as a link in the buildup rather than simply appearing as the player who finishes chances. Pritchard preferred him to Gyökeres as well and, at the time the episode was recorded, even had Havertz in his own Fantasy team.
He might not be the most obvious name when we think about Arsenal's attack, but at £7.5m there are enough arguments to take him seriously.
One player to monitor
Martin Ødegaard — £6.5m
Martin Ødegaard is one of the players to monitor. His £6.5m price is interesting, although Arsenal now have an enormous number of alternatives in midfield.
What really interests me is his positioning. Ødegaard finished last season well and has appeared intent on playing further forward during preseason.
If that advanced positioning continues and begins translating into returns, £6.5m could quickly become a very attractive price. Before committing to him, however, I want to see his minutes and, above all, how consistently he can produce Fantasy points.
One player to overlook
Bruno Guimarães — £7.0m
One of Arsenal's new faces this season is Bruno Guimarães. We know perfectly well how talented he is, what he can create and how much control he can bring to a midfield, but being an outstanding Premier League footballer and being an outstanding Fantasy asset are two different things.
Bruno can play as a six or alongside Declan Rice, and that is precisely where the problem begins. At Arsenal, he may not enjoy the same attacking freedom he had at Newcastle. Pritchard does not consider him a particularly attractive option to begin with either and believes his function within Arsenal's new midfield could limit his Fantasy potential.
At £7.0m, slightly more expensive than Ødegaard and potentially operating in a deeper role, there are simply too many alternatives I would rather own. For now, he stays off our list.
Liverpool
Liverpool enter a new era under Andoni Iraola, and that alone makes them one of the most interesting teams to watch during the opening gameweeks.
The idea appears to be a return to much more aggressive football, built around a high press and with Florian Wirtz moving close to Alexander Isak when Liverpool try to regain possession. Lauren Harris, Liverpool's correspondent, expects a team playing with far greater intensity, but she also warned that this approach could produce much more open matches while the players adjust to the system.
Liverpool could become one of the most attractive teams in Fantasy precisely because their matches might be much more open.
From an attacking Fantasy perspective, that interests us enormously.
Three players to pick
Alexander Isak — £9.0m
Alexander Isak is an excellent candidate, although his £9.0m price represents a significant investment.
His biggest advantage is quite simple: he is Liverpool's starting number nine. With little natural competition for the position, he is likely to accumulate plenty of minutes, although obviously his fitness will remain important. Staying healthy has repeatedly been one of his biggest obstacles.
There have been encouraging signs during preseason, and Harris particularly highlighted the connection he is beginning to develop with Florian Wirtz. She is also starting the season with Isak in her own team.
There is plenty of confidence in him, and this could perfectly well be another season in which we see him fighting near the top of the goalscoring charts, just as we became accustomed to seeing at Newcastle.
Florian Wirtz — £7.5m
The second player we should strongly consider is Florian Wirtz.
Here we find something different from what we saw last season. Iraola appears prepared to use him in a position much closer to his ideal role. He operates as the number ten and, when Liverpool press, moves almost alongside Isak. That means that whenever Liverpool regain possession high up the pitch, Wirtz should immediately find himself in exactly the kind of position from which he can create a chance.
Harris also highlighted his involvement on corners and reached a conclusion that could prove controversial: Wirtz may actually have a higher Fantasy ceiling than Dominik Szoboszlai.
That is a significant statement considering the consistency we have seen from the Hungarian, but Wirtz's positioning within Iraola's new system makes him well worth considering.
Dominik Szoboszlai — £7.0m
And that brings us directly to the third player: Dominik Szoboszlai.
He still has many of the qualities that make him tremendously interesting for Fantasy. He is involved in set pieces, possesses that extraordinary long-range shot and, perhaps most importantly, offers considerable security of minutes. His versatility should keep him consistently involved in Iraola's team even if some of the pieces around him change.
Harris is beginning the season with both Wirtz and Szoboszlai, although if forced to choose only one she would take the German because of his greater attacking ceiling.
Szoboszlai is the kind of player who will probably become a fixture in many teams, particularly given Liverpool's favorable opening schedule. It seems difficult to begin without any of their attacking players, and there are perfectly reasonable arguments for owning more than one.
One player to monitor
Milos Kerkez — £5.5m
Our player to monitor comes from the defense: Milos Kerkez.
We also heard his name on this week's Bendito Fantasy podcast, where Profe mentioned him as a possible way into the Liverpool defense at a relatively low price while retaining interesting attacking potential.
Harris herself acknowledges that Kerkez has been heavily involved going forward from left-back. The problem is not necessarily Kerkez. It is Liverpool. We need to discover how solid Iraola's team will actually be defensively and whether they can produce enough clean sheets to make us want to invest in this back line.
With that uncertainty, if we eventually want a Liverpool defender, entering through a £5.5m player with attacking upside may prove considerably more attractive than paying for one of the premium alternatives.
One player to overlook
Virgil van Dijk — £6.5m
And those defensive concerns are precisely why Virgil van Dijk is the Liverpool player we are leaving out.
Not because he is a bad Fantasy player. Quite the opposite. He has several routes to points: potential clean sheets, DefCon and, of course, the threat he poses from every corner. The problem is his price.
Harris was particularly pessimistic about Liverpool's defense and believes that, while the team learns to execute Iraola's aggressive press, they could concede opportunities against almost anyone. Even so, if she had to select a Liverpool defender, Van Dijk would remain the most reliable option.
But at £6.5m, we need more than reliability. We need production that justifies the investment, and while cheaper routes into the same defense exist, that extra million can probably be put to better use elsewhere.
Arsenal and Liverpool will once again be major players this season, and several of these names will almost certainly find their way into our teams at some point. As always, the key is not simply finding the best footballer, but finding the best footballer for Fantasy. And between Tzolis, Calafiori, Havertz, Isak, Wirtz and Szoboszlai, we have several interesting places to start.
